Kind hearted student librarians from The John Roan School have been spreading festive cheer in their local community this winter. From hosting craft afternoons and Christmas parties, making decorations, carol singing, and even restocking a library, the John Roan School Community Librarians along with even found time to get to the National Finals of the Goldsmiths Community Engagement Awards.

Deborah Fitzpatrick, Community Project Outreach Co-ordinator at local venue Mycenae House has been working with the John Roan Community Librarians for a number of years was full of praise for the students:

“The Community Librarians work has made a huge impact on our community around Westcombe Park and beyond! Looking back over the intergenerational projects with The John Roan School brought back memories of our projects together which include:

  • Running crafts and poetry events in local care homes
  • Knitathon and yarn bombing to raise awareness of dementia
  • Training fellow pupils to be Dementia Friends
  • Community meals at Mycenae House
  • Lunch Club for seniors at The John Roan School
  • Volunteer waiter/waitresses for our Cabaret for Seniors
  • Organising discos for those with disabilities/mobility challenges
  • Knitting with the Drop in Cafe
  • Volunteers at Christmas events

And we have lots more planned for 2022!

One lovely student effectively “adopted” one of our 85 year old regulars from Mycenae House during the lockdown and they have become like a second family to each other. I’m so proud of the fact that the students got through to the National Finals of the Goldsmiths Community Engagement Awards for their work throughout the local community! It was so well deserved, we love working with them all!"

In the run up to Christmas, the Community Librarians also delivered hand made decorations, wellbeing packages and book advent calendars to Blackheath care homes Rectory Court and Mandela House, but sadly the carol singing had to take place via Zoom calls.

John Roan School Librarian, Jennifer Allen runs the Community Librarians as a club who meet every Monday lunch time. She is extremely proud of the fact that her students got to the national finals of the Goldsmiths Community Engagement Awards in November. They didn’t win, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and the lunch! As librarians, the team also helped to

“At The John Roan School we aim to develop character, compassion and service to the community, as well as providing a wide variety of enriching experiences for our students. The Librarians are a remarkable group of young people who genuinely enjoy doing something that benefits others. They have also learnt so much from the planning and organising of all the community events, and the Goldsmiths Community Engagement Awards developed their confidence and public speaking skills. I am extremely proud of them.”

Jennifer Allen, John Roan School Librarian

"The thing I enjoy most is being with the other librarians having fun and going on trips. When we go to the care home, I love making the people laugh and smile. It makes my day knowing I made their day".

Sophia O' Keefe (Year 9)

“Being a Community Librarian means being willing to help those who are vulnerable in our local community and being willing to put a smile on their faces.”

Emer Tyan (Year 9)
