The John Roan Foundation

John Roan died in 1644 and bequeathed his estate to educate the town-born children of Greenwich. Nearly 400 years later his original bequest has grown so the John Roan Foundation owns not only the Maze Hill school site and school's playing fields in Kidbrooke Park Road, but also a property portfolio in Greenwich.

The rental income from the property portfolio provides a significant yearly income which the Trustees apply in line with John Roan's original bequest and is used to pay for educational purposes and projects at The John Roan School which fall outside what the State would normally fund.  This includes:

  • The opportunity for every student to learn to play a musical instrument free of charge
  • Prizes & awards such as  the Roan Exhibition. First awarded in 1882, it is awarded every year to the boy and girl who have achieved the highest results in their A levels. It is a bursary of £500 paid for 3 years to help them through their choice of further education.

  • Additional improvements to the school,  such as a dedicated sixth form area
  • Running costs for the school's minibuses
  • Enhanced sport opportunities such as our Basketball Academy and Football Coaching Programme
  • Debating and public speaking training
  • Subject specific trips and visiting speakers

In addition, the Foundation’s funding gives the students at John Roan a unique experience to widen their horizons in being able to experience a variety of extracurricular activities. Every member of staff can apply for funding for activities and equipment which means that the children can benefit from the inventive and creative ideas of any teacher in the school.

  • The John Roan Foundation Trustees

There are thirteen trustees (who are actually directors of a company which is the sole corporate trustee of The John Roan Foundation) of which nominations are made by Royal Borough of Greenwich (two nominations), University of Greenwich, the staff, Old Roan Association and JRSA. The headteacher is an ex officio member and the remaining six Trustees are co-opted.

The Trustees normally meet six times a year to consider applications for funding and also to ensure the properties and other investments are properly managed, to ensure John Roan's bequest continues to benefit the children of Greenwich for generations to come.

The John Roan Foundation: Registered Charity Number 312707

The John Roan Foundation is the charitable trust that owns the School building and provides much-needed additional funding to the School. The Foundation is modernising its governance structure by appointing a 'corporate trustee', which means that a not-for-profit company will become the sole trustee of the Foundation and the Foundation's current trustees will become directors of the not-for-profit company. This structure makes it easier for the Foundation to manage its property and is a common structure for charities like the Foundation.

Under the Foundation's constitution, teachers and the PTA at the School currently each elect one of the Foundation's trustees and will in future be able to elect a director of the not-for-profit company. This change has been approved by the Foundation's current trustees, but the Foundation is also required by the Charity Commission to consult more widely. If you have any comments or questions, please contact Linda Nelson, Chair of the Foundation, via email cath.smith@thejohnroanschool.org.uk - no later than 11 August 2019.
