Re: Strike Action

As you are aware, the membership of the National Education Union (NEU) has voted to take industrial action in schools across the country. The continuation of this strike action is for two days in July: Wednesday 5^th July and Friday 7^th July. I am writing to give you as much notice as possible about the likely impact this will have on our school.

This is a very busy time of year and we are aiming to provide as much continuity of learning as possible, whilst needing to recognise that without a full staff team some things need to be cancelled or postponed.

Our view, at present, is that we will be able to keep the school open on these days for some students with the following arrangements in place:

As you will be aware, the membership of the National Education Union (NEU) have voted to take industrial action in schools across the country. This will take the form of strike action and the second in a series of days is due to take place on Thursday 2nd March. I am writing to give you as much notice as possible about the likely impact this will have on our school.

The industrial action is a result of a national dispute between the NEU and the government and is not specific to our school nor to United Learning. The overwhelming majority of schools locally and nationally will be impacted but each school will have different arrangements for students due to the number of members of its staff who are likely to strike.

We have been working closely with colleagues here to plan for the strikes so that we can minimise any disruption to our students’ education. Our current understanding is that some colleagues will be taking industrial action and we are thus planning for this accordingly.

In their second annual National Poetry Day competition, the Royal Borough of Greenwich invited students to write a poem inspired by the theme of The Environment. The judging panel were overwhelmed by the quality of the entriesYear 12 student, Suweyda,

Still run as a partnership, with all employees having shares in the business and enjoying special members only perks, John Lewis has been a stalwart of UK high streets for the past century, yet the advent of online shopping, and the emergence of retail giants like Amazon, plus the lasting effects of lockdown have seen John Lewis having to close stores and drastically rethink their business model.

Playing the part of world leaders, Non-Governmental Bodies (NGOs) or Media, the students were tasked with taking part in a real-life climate negotiation simulation, producing a global agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

2022 saw the first formal exams since 2019 and this year's results are a direct reflection of the upwards trajectory of The John Roan School.

In a significant uplift since the last formal exams in 2019, 47% of A Level entries achieved A*-B grades and 71% of entries achieved A*-C grades. For Level 3 equivalent qualifications, 41% of entries achieved the highest marks of Distinction or Distinction*. 

Coach Van-Beest hosted our annual Green & Gold Day at the end of term celebrating basketball achievements this year.

After online celebrations for the past 2 years, it was wonderful to be able to bring students and welcome guests to St Alfege Church, Greenwich.

The Braithwaite Centre is set within 40 acres of land in the stunning Lake District and every John Roan School student has the opportunity to visit during their time here. This term it's the turn of years 8 and 9.

Hope Memorial Trust, which runs the centre, was established by Arthur Hope, a former Headteacher of The John Roan School from the 1920s. He wanted to give our capital’s young people the opportunity to experience the beauty beyond their urban environment.

The centre acts as the perfect base for our students to access a wide variety of pursuits they may otherwise never experience, embrace the beauty of our spectacular countryside and be challenged and inspired by the bountiful nature of outdoor life. Activities that students can enjoy include:

• Rock climbing
• Hill walking
• Orienteering
• Nature rambles
• Canoeing
• Swimming
• Ghyll scrambling

Students who have visited always talk about the lasting impression that their trip will have on them. Trips have been extremely limited over the past 2 years, making this visit even more impactful.

Outdoor experience days help students to rise to new challenges, push themselves, build confidence and learn to work as a team.
