Opportunities for access

A number of events, integrated into the school careers programme, will offer providers an opportunity to come into school to speak to students and/or their parents.

Please speak to Mr Garvey to identify the most suitable opportunity for you. The school policy on safeguarding sets out the school’s approach to allowing providers into school as visitors to talk to our students.

We work hard to develop ‘career ambition’:

Career and employability education is taught through our pastoral programme. Students are invited to complete a range of careers tasks independently through our Unifrog platform. Having this in place allows us to measure the impact on the careers education taking place and also address the specific needs of our students in each year group.

The Careers and Enterprise Company (CEC)

The CEC is the national body for careers education in England, supporting schools and colleges to deliver modern, 21^st century careers education. Their mission is to help every young person find their best next step. Our involvement with CEC allows us to share good practice with other education facilities within the local area and provides us with access to a wide variety of careers opportunities.

Unifrog

The platform is used by all students from years 7-13 and provides them with a one-stop shop to access everything careers related, focusing on increasing awareness, developing understanding of the needs of different careers route, and allowing them to complete a progressive plan of their future steps.

We are regularly collaborating with the University of Greenwich to provide students with the opportunity to experience all that university entails.

Prospects

We have funded a programme that allows all students in year 11 to receive a 1-2-1 careers interview with a careers professional. Students in other year groups also have the opportunity to access this support upon request. We also offer individual and group interviews for students in year 13.

We have a range of fantastic opportunities that students can gain employment skills from within our school. These include:

Life Skills created with Barclays offers support for students with job choice and preparation:

• Click on the CV Builder which gives students  step by step guidance on how to create  a CV and allows them to link to their social media profiles to help them populate it with interests and hobbies.

Career ambition workshops 

Throughout the academic year we offer a range of career ambition workshops.

These sessions involve students engaging with universities, employers and training providers from around the world.  

Students in year 7,8,9 all benefit from the following three workshops: 

• Bright Future Career ambition 
• Personal career development sessions  
• Cultural Capital trips inc University visits.   

An integral part of the growth and development of The John Roan school is learning from the journeys and progress of our former students and staff once they move on from their time here.

To bring together former students and staff once they move on to their next challenge, we are launching the John Roan school alumni programme in conjunction with The John Roan Foundation.

Our Alumni are former students that wish to stay in touch with the John Roan and become involved in various activities throughout the year;

• Allow Alumni to engage with careers activities, speak at events and mentor current students.
• Have the opportunity to attend our annual founders day, a chance for former students to celebrate the history of the school whilst celebrating and sharing experiences with our current student body. 

Our aim is to develop a network of former students and staff that are able to support the development of The John Roan school and its community.
