Assessment

At The John Roan School, we have two key assessment points for students in years 7-10. These are called Mid-Year and End of Year assessments.

In the academic year 2023-24 our assessments for years 7-10 will be held during the following dates:

Assessment point

Dates

Mid-Year Assessments

15/01/2024- 26/01/2024

End of Year Assessments

03/06/2024 – 28/06/2024

As we approach these assessments, we will update this section of the website to provide you with assessment timetables. However you can support your child in the build up to exams by supporting their revision.

Mid-Year Assessments, 15/01/2024- 26/01/2024

Mid-Year assessments will be sat by students in years 7-10 between 15th - 26th January 2024. These assessments will be held entirely in class for Y7-9. Year 10 will sit one exam in their EBacc subjects in the exam hall and other subjects in class. Please see below the timetable for each year group.

What should my Child be revising for the Mid-Year Assessments?

To ensure that your child has every chance of success for the Mid-Year Exams, we have provided topic lists to aid their revision. These are provided in their revision planning booklets and can also be found below. Students should also use their printed knowledge organisers to support their revision.

How can I support my child to revise at home?

The best way to support your child at home is to create a focused environment for your child to revise in. We suggest that parents create this through:

  • Ensuring your child is revising at a desk or table.
  • Focused Revision without mobile phones, laptops or other distractions.
  • Chunked revision time – revise for only a short amount of time with breaks in between. A 30-10-30 strategy works well. 30 minutes of revision, 10-minute break, followed by a further 30 minutes of revision.
  • Help your child revise by testing them on key knowledge from their revision notes.

What materials can my child use to revise?

All children in KS3 have been provided with knowledge organisers for the key knowledge that they will be assessed on. Students should revise all taught content using these knowledge organisers. Teachers of year 10 will provide students separate revision materials for each subject. Students have been taught in their form groups the revision technique – Look, Cover, Write, Check amongst others. We suggest that your child use these methods to support them in their revision for mid-year exams.

Our homelearing platforms are another way to support your child to revise. These include:

  • Sparx Reader (Reading)
  • Seneca (Science and Humanities)
  • Sparx (Maths)

Through these programs your child can revise and then practise key knowledge to support their revision.

We will also produce a revision booklet to support your child throughout the assessments. This is designed to enable them to plan their revision and contains useful support on how to revise effectively. An example of this can be found linked on this page.

Wellbeing and Support

It is very important that your child takes care of their wellbeing during the lead up to exams. If you they are feeling a bit overwhelmed or stressed during this time, know that they are not alone.

Below are some of the ways to cope so stress does not affect your revision or your health:

Graphical user interface, textDescription automatically generated

Your child should seek support from their Head of Year or the pastoral support team if they are feeling stressed or overwhelmed by Exams.
