Exam & Key Stage Results

Key Stage 4

For the first time, the majority of GCSE subjects were graded using the new number grades (9-1) which give a greater range of higher attainment. Despite the increased level of challenge, there were a number of excellent individual performances, with 13 pupils averaging a Grade 7 or above in each subject (equivalent to the old A grade). Nevertheless, overall measures of both attainment and progress fell compared to 2017.

There is also much to do in order to improve attainment of the Basics measure (gaining a 5 in both English and Maths) and the EBACC (passing English, Maths, Science, either History or Geography, and a Foreign Language). Attainment and progress was much stronger in BTEC qualifications, where over 87% of pupils gained a Level 2 pass or better with more than half of grades at Merit or Distinction.

In terms of individual performances, special mention should be made to all those who made good progress against their expected outcomes, individually to Marcel Adamczyk, who made the most progress, performing on average three grades above expectations in each subject and finally to Eldona Kupa, who was one of just 732 candidates in the country to attain a Grade 9 for all of her exams, as well as two A*s.

Key Stage 5

Top grades (A*-B) this year have increased significantly by over 10% to 49%, ensuring that more of our students than ever are able to go to the university of their choice. This coupled with outstanding vocational results which has seen 94% of entries at Distinction or Distinction* grades means that The John Roan Sixth Form has indeed proved that it is an excellent Sixth Form Centre in Greenwich for pupils of all backgrounds to make great progress and achieve their best.

We would like to congratulate all our students for their hard work and their well-deserved results and look forward to hearing about their future successes and the positive difference they go on to make in the wider world.
